This post is a long time coming, as I give this smoothie recipe out to almost everyone I work with who’s looking to live a bit healthier and boost the nutrition in their diet in the most delicious way! It’s my go-to on many mornings because its an amazing way to sip on my breakfast while knowing I’m having an extremely nutrient dense, fiber and antioxidant fueled glass of goodness.
The ingredients are simple, affordable, and there are many optional add-ins that can take it up a nutritional notch if you choose. It’s the perfect meal or snack option this time of year as the holidays are approaching and there are a myriad of treats everywhere we turn. This smoothie is a great reassurance that you’ll be getting a large dose of nutrients and fueling your body with the good stuff, not to mention fiber to fuel your gut health and regularity.
These ingredients also provide a great source of hydration, and as I love to mention it’s an amazing way to EAT your water! Eating your recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables ensures that your cells and body are being hydrated properly (in addition to drinking water throughout the day!)
If you’re someone who likes to skip breakfast, give this smoothie a try! It’s quick to blend (especially if you pre-prep frozen ingredients) and is a great way to boost the nutrition in your diet by sipping on what tastes like a delicious banana milkshake! This gives me the energy I need to power through a long day, and it’s great on digestion in the morning to continue our detoxification process that occurs during sleep the night before.
-The cinnamon is a known blood sugar stabilizer, helping the body to absorb sugar more steadily and improves insulin action.
-Flax and/or chia seeds + hemp seeds are a great source of plant protein, fiber, and omega 3 fatty acids that are essential in the diet. Omega 3s make up cell membranes, help lower triglycerides, improve brain health, blood flow, reduce inflammation and more!
-Turmeric, as you probably know by now is one of my all time favorites, and is one of the most anti-inflammatory plant foods we know of!
-Maca root is an adaptogen that helps our body naturally “adapt” to stressors, is great for hormone balancing and improving PMS symptoms (ladies).
To provide the most optimal texture, make sure to use a high speed blender and blend until completely smooth! Feel free to adjust the nut milk/water/liquid to your liking if you like your smoothies on the thinner or thicker side. These are best consumed fresh, but if storing for later use, I suggest filling a jar up to the top with the leftover smoothie, as any air left in the container will cause the smoothie to oxidize more quickly.
- 1/2-1 banana, frozen
- 2 cups organic baby spinach
- 1 tsp. chia seeds or flax seeds
- 2 tsp. hemp seeds
- 1/2 tsp. turmeric
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder (I use organic pea protein, hemp, grass fed whey or collagen peptides)
- 1/2 tsp. maca powder (optional)
- 1 1/4-1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk, depending on desired thickness
- Simply add all ingredients to a high speed blender and blend until completely smooth. Enjoy!
- A frozen banana creates a creamier smoothie and is a substitute for ice. Frozen spinach also works really well here!
