Hi, I’m Samantha. Just like you, I use products every day from skin care, to makeup, to shampoos and body wash, sunscreen, and more. And I’m sure just like you too, I started to second guess the products we slather on ourselves daily that are supposed to improve our skin, appearance, and health. How are these products formulated? Do they contain toxic ingredients? As I started becoming more aware of the food industry and food additives, I also started to become concerned about what was in the products we use daily on our skin. When I started scanning my products to assess their safety on the Environmental Working Group Healthy Living app, I wasn’t happy with what I found. A lot of products we use in our everyday lives are downright HARMFUL to our bodies and have cancer promoting ingredients, endocrine disruptors and even have reproductive concerns.
What we put on our skin is just as important as what we eat, and that’s why as a Registered Dietitian I feel that it is part of my mission to help you find safer products to protect your health from the inside and out. This is what drew me to be a part of Beautycounter and their mission to CHANGE the industry, address Congress and create safer products for all of us in this highly unregulated sector of personal care products.
Companies in the U.S. are ALLOWED to use known toxins and carcinogens in our everyday products like shampoos, skin care, soaps, lotions, and sunscreens without having to disclose these ingredients or their harmful effects – seems a bit crazy, right? Luckily, there are some companies who are taking it upon themselves to not settle for harmful ingredients. Beautycounter is one of the companies who are paving the way to transparent, cleaner products with safer ingredients as well as a lower carbon footprint for a safer planet.

Researchers at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health released a study in 2013 that detected lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals in popular brands of lipsticks and lip glosses commonly found in drugstores and department stores. They also noted that children are especially susceptible to heavy metal accumulation in their cells and bodies. How many young teenage girls can you think of who get into makeup and apply daily, even multiple times per day?! These toxic ingredients are still allowed to be put in our products today.
Beautycounter has banned over 1,500 ingredients, called The Never List, which consists of “common” ingredients that can be harmful and toxic yet are permitted to be in our cosmetics to this day by the FDA. They are setting a new bar and creating new standards, helping to lead the industry with innovative products that are high performing yet safe and non-toxic. It was a no brainer when I discovered how this company is making changes on a legislative level, yet do not sacrifice on product performance.

Every single Beautycounter product is rated between 0-2 on EWG’s Skindeep database, the best score being 0, the worst score being 10, and many of the producs are “EWG certified.” This app and website is one of the best resources to assess products in a pinch for safety, carcinogens, allergens, and reproductive concerns.
